EatingAsia is labor of love.
We are freelance writer Robyn Eckhardt and photographer David Hagerman (davidhagermanphotography.com). We've collaborated on articles for Chicago Tribune, South China Morning Post, Wall Street Journal Asia, Olive (UK), Flavours (Malaysia), and Saveur (US) magazines. We write about and photograph food for Time Out Kuala Lumpur. Look for our Food & Drink chapter in the forthcoming Lonely Planet Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, and Penang guide.
We've been besotted with Asian food since the mid-eighties, when we taught English in and ate our way around Chengdu, Sichuan province (China). Since then we've lived in Asia - off and on - for twelve years. Dim sum in Hong Kong, xiaolong bao in Shanghai, grilled chicken and somtam in Bangkok, bun thit nuong in Saigon, and char kway teow in Kuala Lumpur - no matter where we've settled, seeking out the best in local scoff has always been a priority.
EatingAsia's content is Malaysia-centric only because this is where we live now. But when it comes to the region's cuisines we don't play favorites. Whenever possible we also draw inspiration extended stays in China, Thailand, and Vietnam, travels around the region, and the photos, notes, impressions, and memories of Asian food that we've collected over the years.
After so many years in the region we continue to be surprised by the foods we encounter and fascinated by the cultures and contexts of which they are a part. Running out of topics isn't a worry.
