EatingAsia is about (mostly) Asian food and the people who produce and cook it; Asian culinary cultures and food traditions; and food as an entree into cultures not our own. Eating local when we travel is one of the best ways we know to find our place in unfamiliar setting.
We are freelance journalist Robyn Eckhardt and editorial and commercial freelance photographer David Hagerman. We've been eating and living in Asia for over fourteen years. Since 2005 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia has been home.
We write and photograph on food, travel, historical and cultural preservation, and music for the New York Times, Saveur, Travel+Leisure and Wall Street Journal. We also contribute stories and slideshows to food and wine website Zester Daily (zesterdaily.com). Robyn is a former Food Editor at Time Out Kuala Lumpur and author of Food & Drink chapters for Lonely Planet guides to Vietnam and Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. David has photographed for commercial clients such as CIMB Bank Berhad, Electrolux and Nestle's.
When not on assignment we conduct customized food tours in Kuala Lumpur and Penang; David offers one-on-one instructional photography tours geared to each student's skill level and goals as a photographer.
We work together when we can -- but not exclusively -- and are always open to discussing commissions. Email is the best way to reach us:
