We Are Here...
...in spite of what you may think, given the silence on this site. I do apologize, but the last three weeks have been a rush of deadlines and edits and travel (Bangkok last week is a blur, but we've got the photos to prove we were there - and soon enough we'll have the posts too). And we won't be here long, because we leave for the States this afternoon.
Friday evening we'll be dishing up palm sugar samples at the Asian Culinary Forum's 'Asian Food Beyond Borders' kickoff event (check out the teaser on the Asian Culinary Forum website). If you've signed up for the Chinatown tour and/or the Pairing Wines with Asian Food class on Saturday, look for Dave - he'll be the guy with the camera.
As for me, I've got a date on Saturday morning with a pig (or, more accurately, a piece of a pig part) at San Francisco's Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market.
And we should be back to posting more regularly, once we've touched down.

I got to check this one out. We haven't gone to the Ferry Farmer's Plaza on a Saturday yet ... so this might just be one good reason to do it. I take it that Thomas' porchetta is available every Saturday?

pixeldose, as far as I'm concerned this porchetta is THE reason to go the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market on Saturdays. However - Thomas does not offer it every single week. You're best off giving him a jingle or sending an email (I believe I linked Roli Roti in that post) a day in advance to be sure.
I sure will be disappointed if I come up porchetta-less this Sat....

Ooooh, have fun! I'll be sure to get some of that pork myself next time I'm there. If I'm there early enough. (Hard to haul oneself across the Bay that early on a Saturday.) Thanks for the tip!

Awesome. I just talked to them a minute ago and they said they're gonna have the porchetta this Saturday ... best time to be there is between 8:30 to 9:30 according to them. Apparently, they sell out pretty fast. Hey, I might just bumped into you Robyn :).

After recognizing the stand from other area farmers markets, and visiting the roliroti website, it just so happens that the stand visits other area markets. I think they do set up in Oakland on Friday morning and Saturday afternoon... Maybe you need not cross the bay.
I shop most fridays at the Old Oakland Farmers Market. I guess this is a good reason to get there earlier.

I'll be at the "six flavors" or whatever it's called. Looking forward to the palm sugar. I didn't realize how hard it was to get good sugar out here until after I moved back.

Kitt - This pork is worth heading across the Bay early for.
pixeldose - who knows. Look for the tall woman swooning over her porchetta.
Hi a - my understanding is that they don't have the porchetta at every farmer's market they visit (but the chicken, with potatoes roasted in the dripping chicken fat, look pretty good too).
Look forward to meeting you this eve. Should be fun. There will be a sinigang tasting at the sour station!

I just saw your name in the San Francisco Weekly yesterday and thought, hmm, that sounds familiar. Took me a minute to place it though!
(I've been reading your blog for a couple of years and e-mailed you back in April looking for vegetarian food in KL -- I ended up eating plenty of delicious meals, just not too many that were actually Malay)
Would love to make it out to tonight's event but I'm fairly new to SF and my budget is pretty tight. If I do decide to fork over the cash, I'll be sure to say hello. Good luck!

yeah, you're right. Just returned from the old Oakland Farmers market, and no porchetta. Chicken and taters though.

Hi Delia - glad you ate well in MY. Understand abt the event - it's not cheap but then again how often do you get a chance to do a tasting of sinigang and artisanal palm sugars etc. Do i.d. yourself if you decide to go...
Aaron - chick and spuds are not a bad consolation prize...

Hi Robyn,
Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday. Hopefully he'll still have some left. I should call and email him and ask him to place some in reserve for us ;-)

Nice to meet you this evening. Unfortunately I blanked out and was unable to think of anything interesting to say. Guess I wanted to tell both you and Dave how much I like the site, the articles, and the photos. Next time perhaps. Thanks a million for the sugar at the stand and for takeaway. It most very appreciated.

that should read: It was most appreciated. Or maybe: It was very appreciated. Take your pick!

Did you have the pig knuckle as well as the porchetta? We tried the pig knuckle while we were there last month, and I just about died!
Wish we were in the Bay Area this weekend...
